Are you addicted to sugar?

Sugar addiction is a real problem, especially in the U.S.  You might not know you are "addicted", but think for a moment how often you reach for a soda, a candy bar, add sugar to your coffee, etc., etc.  This leads to two major problems:  WEIGHT GAIN and INFLAMMATION!

Think about soda servings -- we used to drink a 12 oz. soda at the most, and now it's a 64 ounce soda.  Even kids are consuming more sugar than ever.

Healthy Smoothies Recipe!

This is one of my favorite smoothie recipes....

- frozen berries (1-2 cups)

- spinach (same portion as the berries)

- unsweetened coconut milk (1 cup)

- Maximized Living vanilla protein (1 scoop)

- 1/2 cup water

This makes a great breakfast or snack!

2012 Olympics

The 2012 Summer Olympics will be held in London and I will be going!!!  I can't wait to serve as a team chiropractor through Maximized Living.  Maximized Living chiropractors serve the USA Judo, Wrestling and Weightlifting teams and have been an integral part of their wellness programs for the last few years.

More and more athletes are getting regular adjustments to maximize their nerve supply, which enhances their performance.  Just think -- if there is pressure on a nerve (even with no symptoms) that is controlling any muscle, will that muscle be functioning at 100%???  Absolutely not!  This is one of the reasons why it is critical for athletes to get regular adjustments!  It maximizes the FUNCTION of their nervous system and overall body.  Plus, it helps to prevent injuries, which is essential for Olympic athletes!

Prevent Heart Disease!

Do you have any family members or friends that have been affected by heart disease?  My grandpa (who I was named after) died from congestive heart failure when I was young.  It now affects 1/2 people in the U.S. and this stat is worsening, sadly.

Health Makeover Event

We had an amazing Makeover on Saturday January 15th!  The responses from attendees have been extremely positive.  Many of the participants are eager to start on the action steps and looking forward to shedding pounds, starting the surge training and much more.  I can't wait to see the health transformations that occur over the next 30-90 days.

Please keep in mind we are holding a recipe night on Monday, January 24th from 6-7pm in the office.  We will be discussing the nutritional plan to help with weight loss and improved health.

Also, we will be holding the biggest loser competition in the office starting this week.  Participants must weigh in by Friday (1/21/11) and the competition will end 3/1/11.

Have you tried yoga???

I will admit - like most guys, I did not think I would ever try yoga.  However, a few years ago, I met Marti Lee.  She, along with her friends (Kelly, Susan and Starr) at Zona Yoga have completely changed my perception of yoga.   I now practice yoga and have found it follows a very similar philosophy to chiropractic and acupuncture.

How do you handle a fever?

Last week, our one year old (Bennett) came down with his first cold.  His nose started running and then he spiked a fever.  It brings up a great question - why do our bodies produce a fever?  A fever is actually a perfect natural immune response!  Our bodies produce a fever because many infectious agents cannot survive at higher temperatures.  Thus, by allowing a fever to run its course, many times a person can get over their cold faster.

Want to burn more fat during your workout?

Have you ever done a cardio workout over and over with no results?  What research is showing is that in order to burn fat, one needs to increase the intensity of their cardio workouts.  The recent trend in cardio workouts is called High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT).  This type of workout is typically done on a treadmill, elliptical or stationary bike.

The benefits of HIIT are as follows:

1) burn more fat and calories, even after working out

2) save time - most HIIT workouts are less than 30 minutes long

High Intensity Interval Training is a cardio workout that looks something like this (I will use the treadmill as an example):

1) warm-up and stretching for 5 minutes (work up a sweat and be sure to stretch appropriately)

2) sprint for 30 seconds (can be 15-45 seconds).  The sprint should be fast enough to the point you have a difficult time talking to the person next to you.                                                              

3) power walk for 1.5 minutes

4) repeat 6-8 times

5) cool down and stretch

Pregnancy & adjustments...

Can pregnant women get adjusted????  Absolutely!  It is very safe and beneficial to be IN ALIGNMENT during pregnancy.  The main benefit is reduced low back discomfort.  Also, a properly aligned pelvis allows for an easier birthing process due to a symmetrical birth canal!

So, feel free to tell your pregnant friends they may be due for an adjustment!

Ever thought about getting your child adjusted?

Chiropractic is for kids, too!  I really enjoy working with children and have adjusted infants (hours or days old) through high schoolers.  Before I went to chiropractic school, I had no idea that children could get adjustments. 

Many people wonder about the safety of children getting adjusted.  The adjustments on infants and children are extremely gentle - typically using less pressure than you would use to pick them up.  And the adjustments are very safe.  The best part is children respond very quickly to adjustments and by having a properly aligned spine, many potential health problems can be PREVENTED!

Some of the common reasons kids get adjusted are:

  • prevention/wellness -- proper nervous system function
  • ear infections
  • colic
  • constipation
  • acid reflux
  • scoliosis
  • asthma
  • ADHD
